New items by James Jean

James Jean

James Jean is a wonderfully talented artist who uses subtle imagery to provoke a wide array of thoughts. He has recently released a book called Rift, which is really neat and also very affordable. It has 15 images that are stamped with gold foil to give them a nice tint and adds a shine to the panels. Each book comes signed and with a nice slipcase to keep the cover safe.

Also, James Jean has a new print, Sink II. Jean using gold leaf to beautifully accent the colors in his print. This new edition is limited to 100 copies, so if it suits your fancy you better pick one up before they’re gone!

More images of both the book and the print are included after the break. (more…)

Andrew Zuckerman “Bird”

Andrew Zuckerman "Bird"

Photographer Andrew Zuckerman‘s latest book, “Bird” is a volume of images that are unbelievably stunning. On the website for the book, you can see several large, striking images of Zuckerman’s subjects. Types of bird I have never seen are displayed with vivid detail isolated against a stark white background. Another fun part about the full screen flash website is that all of the images have different positions on the screen depending on what composition they call for. It keeps the presentation fresh and interesting. You can buy the book at amazon here.

Brian Ewing “Don’t Hold Your Breath”

Brian Ewing "Don't Hold Your Breath"

Brian Ewing is an illustrator who has been working regularly for the Vans Warped Tour and other great musical acts for some time now. His brand new book entitled “Don’t Hold Your Breath: Nothing New From Brian Ewing” is available now and features large full color reproductions of his best work for a variety of clients. You can check out more images from the layout below, and order the book from Amazon for a mere $15.63. For a hardcover, that is a steal! There is also a very cool flip book that lets you browse even more pages of the book. Most interesting about this book is the inclusion of thumbnail sketches for many of the finished designs included in the book as seen below. This sort of behind-the-scenes stuff is very inspiration to any visual artist! (more…)

Hiroaki Samura – The Art of Blade of the Immortal

Hiroaki Samura

Hiroaki Samura is an artist that I’ve been following since the late 90’s when I stumbled upon a copy of Blood of a Thousand at a friend of a friend’s house. The book belonged to the brother of said person and when I asked if I could read it he promptly gave an angry “No”. I got the better of him, I read it while he was gone.

The first thing that struck me was just how different it looked. Everybody knows what manga and anime are supposed to look like. Just the mention brings a preloaded image into your brain. I didn’t get that with Blade of The Immortal. The style was a mix of japanese stylization with a solid grounding in the natural world. Hiroaki’s compositions tell of a clear understanding of the fundamentals of life drawing. The tone was also very modern for a story in historic Japan. Samurai punk would be a good way to describe it. This is a mature title in every way, violent samurai battles, swearing, sexual themes, and political discussion on the idea of the Bushido system that governed the land. (more…)

Dark Night of the Soul

Dark Night of the Soul

Musical favorites Sparklehorse and Danger Mouse have teamed up to create a massive collaborative album, featuring guest spots by members of The Shins, The Flaming Lips, Super Furry Animals, Grandaddy, The Strokes, The Pixies, The Cardigans, Neutral Milk Hotel, Suzanne Vega, Vic Chesnutt, Iggy Pop, and director David Lynch. It is evident by listening to the album that each guest musician had a hand in helping craft their track, making for an eclectic mix of sounds and moods, while managing to remain mostly cohesive. Jim Tierney Does Jules Verne

Faceout Books showcases beautiful book covers. One obvious beauty is from Jim Tierney who adores several Jules Verne books by engaging the reader before narrative has a chance.

You can look a little deeper into the process including some preliminary drawings at Faceout Books Jim Tearney feature.

Andersen M Studio: Stop-Motion Book Trailers

Several months ago thew New Zealand Book Council showed off a fantastic stop-animation short designed for a work of Going West, a work of fiction by Maurice Gee. Andersen M Studio was hired to do the work.

The same studio just finished a new piece for Kate Mortons new Novel The Distant Hours.  It too is a stop-animation short of very detailed paper cut outs.

The Sketchbook Project, 2011

It’s like a concert tour but with sketchbooks.

We’re not even halfway through 2010, but you might want to start thinking about 2011 a bit. At least, if you are interested in participating in The Sketchbook Project, 2011.

Organized by Art House Co-op, a group that seeks to create large art projects that tie hundreds to thousands of artists together, the newest incarnation of their Sketchbook Project for 2011 is possibly the most ambitious attempt yet. Unlike other sketchbook sharing and interactive projects, this one gives each artist their own book to work with, rather than depending on artists to share and ship books among themselves.

Which, honestly? Is probably a good thing. Each person is responsible for their own destiny and whatnot. It’s pretty sensible. (more…)
